Royal Highlanders
Last season's results: (Tied for 4th in Marmonte, 6-4 overall). After winning their first Marmonte League title in 14 years, the Highlanders struggled to repeat as champions in 2005. Even though RHS finished the year strong by going 3-1 in the last month of the season, they still couldn't overcome stinging losses at home to Thousand Oaks and Agoura, defeats that kept them out of the postseason.
Notable returnees: Tonio Celotto, sr., DL; Michael Long, sr., QB; Kevin Redmond, sr., RB; Dylenn Ramirez, sr., FB; Thomas McCormick, sr., WR; Jared Debo, sr., LB; Cameron Flye, jr., LB; Jordan Callaway, sr., DE/TE; Michael Ohrt, sr., WR/TE; Danny Jennings, sr., PK Impact Newcomer: Jake Mittel, jr., DB Who They Play: The Highlanders schedule is rugged again this year as they play two tough games before starting league. Royal begins its season at Chaminade (Sept. 8), and two weeks later, they host a quality Ventura squad (Sept. 21). Once league starts, things won't be easy. Royal opens at home vs. Moorpark (Sept. 29). Three of the team's first four games are at home, and if the Highlanders can get off to a fast start, it'll be huge for their confidence. Royal plays three difficult road games in October-at Westlake (Oct. 6), Thousand Oaks (Oct. 13) and Agoura (Oct. 20).
Overview: The Highlanders have always been known to possess a power running game, and with fullback Ramirez back utilizing his great blocking skills, tailback Redmond could be poised for a breakout year. The offensive line is young, so much of the running game will depend on how fast they can mature.
Another factor is the play of senior quarterback Long, who will have to show improvement. Long only had one game last year where he threw for over 100 yards, and his completion percentage was less than 50 percent. One of Long's favorite targets a year ago was McCormick, who returns for his senior season and should help the quarterback improve.
The defense has many players returning, including the Oregon-bound Celotto, and if they can hold opponents to fewer than 20 points a game like they did in '05, the Highlanders could find themselves near the top of the standings.
In a nutshell: Success will depend on how fast the young offensive line matures. If they play well, Redmond and Long are capable of having nice seasons. If the Highlanders can start fast and get a win against Moorpark, they'll have the confidence they'll need during a tough three-game road trip in October.
