Women's group offers many activities The Delta Kappa Gamma Society for women educators will kick off its new year of activities with the annual initiation luncheon on Sat., Sept. 16 at Sunset Hills Country Club in Thousand Oaks. The theme will be "Stop and Smell the Roses." The Retiree Branch of the group with about 45 members began its new year on Aug. 30 with a breakfast at the Plug Nickel where member Sherrill Hyink discussed the many options available to retirees. The club recently installed new officers and board members, including Sydney Stein, continuing president; Pat Adams, first vice president; Marlene Widdel, second vice president; Lucy Peterson, recording secretary; Karon Maloney, corresponding secretary; Mariann Harmon, treasurer; and Linda Spellman, assistant treasurer. The club's spring scholarship recipient, Katie Nystrom, received a check for $400 for new classroom teacher supplies. Funds for the scholarships come from three golf tournaments. Some of the group's many philanthropic projects have included tutoring children, providing backpacks and school supplies to Many Mansions, making and donating blankets to hurricane victims, giving books-ontape to a school affected by Hurricane Katrina, and providing literacy supplies and teaching manuals to a literacy center in Dominica. A new project this year will be making comfortable, stylish hats for cancer victims with hair loss. For more information about the group or its programs, call Sherrill Hyink at (805) 492-3674 or e-mail shyink@earthlink.net. |
