Sister publication gets new editor

Kyle Jorrey Kyle Jorrey Acorn staff writer Kyle Jorrey has been named editor of the Simi Valley Acorn, replacing Steve Carlson, the current editor.

Carlson, who has headed up the Simi paper for the past two years, is editor of the Moorpark Acorn.

Jorrey, 24, is a 2004 graduate of Pepperdine University where he spent three years at the university's student newspaper, The Graphic, serving as both opinion and sports editor. He was chosen as Pepperdine's journalism Graduate of the Year in 2004.

Jorrey joined the Acorn newspapers as sports editor in May 2004. He's spent the last six months working as lead reporter for the Simi Valley Acorn, and won honorable mention in the 2005 California Newspaper Publisher's Association competition for sports feature writing.

"We have been and always will be a community newspaper dedicated to covering the local stories that often go unreported," Jorrey said. "My goal is to continue that philosophy, while at the same time improving the journalistic quality and integrity of the paper."

Jorrey, who will continue to cover city government in addition to his duties as editor, expressed excitement over the new opportunity.

"Simi is a growing, evolving city with a diverse population of more than 100,000 residents," Jorrey said. "There are many thought-provoking and compelling stories in the community that we will be watching."

The Acorn, Simi Valley Acorn, Thousand Oaks Acorn, Moorpark Acorn and Camarillo Acorn are distributed weekly to a combined 135,000 homes and businesses.
