CLU to dedicate new athletic complex

Gilbert Sports Center Gilbert Sports Center California Lutheran University will dedicate the longawaited Gilbert Sports and Fitness Center at a special public ceremony at 11 a.m. Sat., Oct. 21. The dedication event will include live music, entertainment and remarks from honored guests.

The $18-million Gilbert Sports and Fitness Center is just one of several athletic facilities being built on the 80-acre site north of Olsen Road. Other venues include George "Sparky" Anderson Baseball Field, which was dedicated in January; Samuelson Aquatics Center;

soccer and track and field venues; practice fields; and on-site parking. Construction on the Ullman Baseball Stadium wilbegin in 2007.

The Gilbert Center houses two major gymnasiums (including a 1,500-seat main gym), the Lundring Events Center, a fitness center, a dance studio, classrooms and labs, a sports medicine facility, the Ventura County Sports Hall of Fame, the CLU Alumni Association Athletic Hall of Fame, and offices for faculty, staff and coaches.

Jack Gilbert, chairman of the board of TOLD Corp., and his wife, Carol, are the most generous donors in the nearly 50-year history of the university. Their most recent gift was a $5-million pledge made last August for additional academic buildings and a president's residence.
