Getty Center hosting children's events this month
August is children's month at the Getty Center, featuring a special series of outdoor concerts in the central garden area at 4 and 5 p.m. on Aug. 12 and 13, 19 and 20, 26 and 27. The center is at 1200 Getty Center Drive, Los Angeles.
Admission is free; parking is $7. Picnickers are welcome at the "Garden Concerts for Kids" series, but there are size restrictions on coolers and containers; call (310) 440-7300 for further details.
The witty guitar-and-bass duo called Trout Fishing in America will perform Aug. 12 and 13. The team of Keith Grimwood and Ezra Idlet blend folk and pop with reggae, Latin, blues, jazz and classical music to tell imaginative and heartfelt stories about the delights and dilemmas of growing up.
Ralph Covert and his band Ralph's World will entertain on Aug. 19 and 20. A Chicago indie rocker, Covert entrances children and adults alike with upbeat "but sucrose-free" tales of a child's life starring animals and astronauts, parents and pie slices. Covert, who plays guitar and mandolin, is known for his high-energy and super-melodic approach to children's music.
On Aug. 26 and 27, Charity Kahn and the JAMband ("JAM" is her acronym for "Joy and Music") will wow the audience with their impressive range, from the funkadelic inventiveness of "Happy Birthday Baby" to the playful rebellion of "We Need Mud." Kahn plays flute, piano and electric bass. Her group's mission is to help parents and children share the joy of being alive through song and dance. The band creates catchy melodies that blend funk, bluegrass, reggae, hip-hop and surf music.
