Group to show Japanese films

The Ventura County chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League will show two award-winning films from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Sat., Aug. 5 at the Rockwell Scientific Center auditorium, 1049 Camino Dos Rios, Thousand Oaks.

The first film is "Visas and Virtues," the story of Japanese Consul General Chiune Sugihara who saved the lives of thousands of Jews in Lithuania during World War II. This film won an Oscar in the live action short film category.

The second film, "Day of Independence," explores one Japanese American family's experience during their incarceration in a U.S. internment camp during the World War II.

Chris Tashima, the leading actor in both films, and Tim Toyama, excecutive producer, will be present to introduce the films and lead a discussion after each showing.

A donation is requested: $10 for adults and $5 for youth age 18 and under. Refreshments will be provided.

Proceeds of the event will support the chapter's youth program.
