Common sense tips to beat the heat

Recent temperatures in Ventura County have peaked at more than 100 degrees humidity has been high. The combination of high temperatures and humidity may create a dangerous situation, causing heat-related illness. Children and the elderly are most susceptible to heat stroke.

No person or pet should ever stay in an enclosed vehicle, even for a short amount of time. Temperatures in vehicles quickly rise to life-threatening levels, even if the windows are partially open.

Following are ways to prevent heat-related illness: +Drink plenty of water and nonalcoholic fluids. +Eat light, cool, easy-to-digest foods such as fruits or salad.

+Stay in an air-conditioned room or building. +Stay out of the sun. +Use portable electric fans to exhaust hot air from rooms or draw in cooler air. +Take a cool bath or shower. +Wear loose fitting, light-col

ored clothing. +Never leave children or pets alone in vehicles for any amount of time. +Check on relatives and neighbors, especially homebound elderly. +Know the symptoms of excessive heat exposure and the appropriate response.
