'Music Man' to march into Civic Arts Plaza theater

2006-07-20 / Dining & Entertainment

"The Music Man" arrives with all its wonderful songs, con man shenanigans and demure librarian-as-love-interest when Cabrillo Music Theatre presents the show from July 28 to Aug. 6 in the Fred Kavli Theatre at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza, 2100 E. Thousand Oaks Blvd., Thousand Oaks.

"It's been called as 'American as apple pie and a Fourth of July oration.' That's because it's pure fun, and we intend to make it just that and more," said Carole Nussbaum, president and CEO of Cabrillo. "We're especially excited to bring this timeless classic to the children of our region, including our Adopt-A-School kids."

The audience is invited to watch as the effervescent con man Professor Harold Hill tries to pull a fast one on the citizens of River City, Iowa. Hill's colorful scheme to persuade the town to start a "boys' band" by selling them the necessary instruments, uniforms and lessons is flawed because he knows nothing about music.

But before he can flee with the money he meets Marian, the town's librarian, and his plans and his heart follow a whole other path.

The show features such songs as "Seventy-Six Trombones," "Till There Was You," "Ya Got Trouble" and "Goodnight My Someone." Cabrillo's artistic director Lewis Wilkenfeld directs the production, with musical direction by Darryl Archibald and choreography by John Charron.

Through the Adopt-a-School program, Cabrillo makes theatre accessible to children who otherwise may never have the opportunity to see a live musical theatre performance. Cabrillo donates hundreds of tickets to schools.

Tickets range from $19 to $45 and are available by calling the
