640 graduate from TOHS Two years ago, Megan McCarley was the new kid at Thousand Oaks High School. Her previous high school had 800 students, compared with 2,600 at TOHS and she felt intimidated. Last week, as Associated Student Body president, she stood before her class of 640 seniors, their families and friends during the packed graduation ceremony. "After being on campus for 15 minutes I felt at home. People came up to me and were so friendly and they didn't even know me," McCarley said. McCarley was one of a number of students who spoke during the commencement. Dressed in green or white gowns, under a warm evening sun, some addressed the past while others focused on the future. "We are the children of the peace and love generation and may we never let that flame die," Zara Feeney said. Vanda Gyuris talked about being blessed to live in the United States. "We are living the American dream," Gyuris said. "People in other countries wish they had such opportunity." Students applauded valedictorian May Zhang, whose 4.66 grade point average helped her get into Harvard, where she'll be headed in the fall. Salutatorian Eric Huang, with a 4.62 grade point average, plans to attend UCLA. Joe Wall performed a rap song he wrote; the band played and the chorus sang. Principal Tim Carpenter offered a variety of advice to the Class of 2006, including thanking favorite teachers who made a difference in students' lives. "Enjoy life. Find your passion. Always look for opportunities to use your talents. Call home often just to say hi," Carpenter said. "I'm confident that your contributions will make the world a better place." |
