5 seniors stand out at WHS

Jeff Miller Jeff Miller Playing football in the highly competitive Marmonte League since he was a freshman (and a starter since his sophomore year), graduate Jeff Miller, 18, has a good sense of the word rivalry. Next year though, he'll get a taste of possibly the most heated rivalry in sports.

Miller, a resident of Thousand Oaks, is heading to nearby UCLA to pursue his dreams of playing football. While there, the 6-6, 250-lb. defensive end will have the opportunity to line up against his brother, Jimmy, a 2004 WHS grad and a sophomore tight end at USC. Jeff, who had 14 sacks his junior year and won a state championship when he was a sophomore, said he hopes to go into any field that allows him to stay in sports. Head coach Jim Benkert said, "We've had some great players here at Westlake and Jeff ranks with the best we've ever had."

Miller said his favorite subject in school was history and his favorite thing about Westlake was "the great teachers, coaches, the friendships I've made and the atmosphere."

Shirley Pu Shirley Pu Westlake salutatorian Soo Yeon Kang, 18, hopes to use her many gifts to aid the lives of others.

After graduation, she's heading to Africa for a month with five members of her church to do missionary work, a possible precursor to a career in the medical field. Kang, who will be a freshman at Dartmouth College in the fall, said she'd like to become a medical missionary or an international doctor. medical engineering. The stellar math student from Newbury Park was treasurer of the Westlake Information Technology club and did publicity for the food club for a year.

When she's not in school, Pu said, she enjoys "running, collecting stamps, being with friends, reading and dancing." Her favorite subjects in school were biology, algebra and programming.

According to Pu, "Westlake has provided me many valuable opportunities. Through the internship at Washington Mutual (the school) provided, I've explored the 'real word.' WHS has also given me the best education in order for me to pursue my dream career."

Soo Yeon Kang Soo Yeon Kang While at Westlake, there's very little that Kang wasn't involved in. A member of the varsity girls' basketball and golf teams, the T.O. resident also served as president of the ambassador's club, the earth club, the math club and the advanced anatomy club. She was also a member of the National Honor Society and the Parent Teacher Student Association and earned a Rockwell Scientific internship.

Kang, who liked her advanced anatomy and calculus classes best, said her favorite pastimes are "playing basketball with friends, making music, folding origami and enjoying the company of close friends."

Sammy Seidenberg, 17, is heading to Humboldt State University, where he wants to major in film and make movies. Seidenberg, who's already started making his own films, has a serious interest in the horror genre. A trailer for his self-made horror flick, "The Violent Brain," is available on the Internet.

When he's not thinking about the silver screen, Seidenberg said he gets his kicks skateboarding, snowboarding, surfing or playing lacrosse and hockey. The Westlake Village resident was a member of the hockey and lacrosse teams.

Valine soared on the soccefield as a four-year member of thWarriors' successful program, winning Marmonte League Goalkeepeof the Year in 2005 and cominback in 2006 to be one of the team'top goal scorers as WHS woleague titles both years. One daValine, who's heading to the AiForce Academy in ColoradSprings, Colo., might have the opportunity to soar for real.

When he wasn't making hipresence felt on the pitch, the 18year-old Thousand Oaks residensaid he enjoyed "go-kart racingspeed skating, playing video gamesgolfing and playing with my dogs.While at the Air Force Academy, Valine said, he wants to studaeronautical engineering.

"My favorite memories (from high school) are from the socceseasons and being able to see mgirlfriend in between every class,he said.
