A series of special events will be presented Sat. and Sun., June 10 and 11 at the Rancho Sierra Vista/Satwiwa site, a unit of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, off Via Goleta from Lynn Road in Newbury Park.

From 8 a.m. to noon Sat., June 10, the Santa Monica Mountains Fund will sponsor the second Native Plant Fair in conjunction with the National Park Service.

Events include native plants for sale, educational materials on gardening with native flora and tours of the National Park Service's Ethnobotanic Garden and Native Plant Nursery. The fair will be in the park's main parking lot. All proceeds of plant sales will benefit park restoration and education projects.

More than 25 species of native plants will be available for sale, including golden currant, purple needlegrass, scarlet and bush monkeyflowers, coast sunflower and deer grass. Sycamore and coast live oak trees in different sizes will also be available for purchase.

The fair will also feature displays on gardening with native plants, opportunities for volun

teering in the park, park restoration activities, plants for wildlife and fire-safe landscaping.

On Sun., June 11, the Native American Indian Culture Center at Rancho Sierra Vista/Satwiwa will host artist and craftsman David Snooks, a Washoe from Pine Grove in Amador County. Snooks will present workshops from 10 a.m. to noon and again from 1 to 3 p.m. He uses traditional colors, themes, designs and materials such as gourds and beadwork to create museum-piece art.

The Washoe are known for their fine basketry. Snooks' greatgrandmother, grandmother and mother were basket makers.

"When I first started painting gourds I wanted to paint and reproduce on my gourds the traditional designs of these baskets," said Snooks, "but tradition requires that I first seek and receive permission from the family. The design itself is a spiritual reproduction of the baskets' design."

Reservations are required and class size is limited to 20 participants. Ages 8 and up may attend. Workshops and parking are free. To register, call (805) 375-1930.
