Wheelchair users invited to tour park
Sponsored by the Conejo Valley YMCA and supported by the National Park Service, the annual "Wheel to the Sea" from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Sat., May 13 at Point Mugu State Park will enable wheelchair users to tour the park.
The guided hike will also have the support of a volunteer mountain bicycle patrol, the Wilderness Institute and three Kiwanis clubs as well as the assistance of the California Highway Patrol.
Participants will meet at the starting point at Rancho Sierra Vista/Satwiwa, a unit of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area off Via Goleta/Lynn Road in Newbury Park. Special buses will take participants into Sycamore Canyon and the site of the Danielson Ranch where Kiwanis members will serve breakfast at oakshaded picnic tables.
Following breakfast and a welcome orientation from the National Park Service and other support teams, the group will begin its four-mile, 3.5-hour trek to the beach through the picturesque canyon. The course requires 11 stream crossings.
Naturalists will accompany the group and provide commentary on the canyon's flora and fauna. Both the canyon bottom and slopes are often colorful with wildflowers this time of year, and deer sightings are not uncommon.
At about 2:30 p.m. the group will reach Pacific Coast Highway, where California Highway Patrol officers will help to guide hikers safely across the road to Sycamore Cove State Beach.
At the beach, the Kiwanis barbecue wagon crew will provide a lunch of burgers and grilled chicken.
Wheelchair users may get close to the surf during their visit to the beach courtesy of specialized "beach buggy" chairs with balloon tires that are able to navigate across the sand. The cove features rugged rock formations, a shaded picnic area and an opportunity to watch sea lions.
Buses will take all participants back to the starting point around 5 p.m.
