'Beyond Atkins' program comes to Conejo YMCA
The Conejo Valley YMCA is introducing a healthy family weight loss and wellness program based on the principles of Dr. Doug Markham, author of "Total Health and Beyond Atkins." Markham conducts free monthly two-hour introduction seminars at the Y. Participants then take part in weekly customized programs that monitor health and weight loss progress.
During the meetings, participants learn how to combine eating healthy foods with regular exercise and intellectual and spiritual growth. Healthy snacks will be provided for participants.
Sessions are from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on the fourth Monday of every month at the Conejo Valley YMCA, 4031 N. Moorpark Road, Thousand Oaks.
Weekly programs are customized to each individual. Participants will first have an initial 10to-15-minute weight loss and wellness evaluation performed by a trained YMCA staff member.
"Participants will be weighed in and their body fat measured," said Janelle Achenbach, YMCA health and fitness director. "They'll also receive meal menu options based on their individual goals and body frame size. Weekly follow-ups track progress. Participants will also be able to log on to a member page where they'll be able to monitor their weight, body fat and blood pressure, access healthy recipes and read the latest in health, fitness and nutrition news."
The cost is $5 per week for YMCA members ($20 per month) and $10 per week for nonmembers ($40 per month).
