Cyclists to take tour

2006-04-27 / Community

The Conejo Valley Cyclists will present their 22nd annual "Cruisin' the Conejo" fun and fitness bicycle ride on Sat., May 13. Each year, the ride raises funds for the club to donate to local charities.

This year, in partnership with Giant Bicycles, proceeds from the ride will help provide free bicycles for the Conejo Valley Unified School District to use at three preschool centers and for students in need at six Title One schools in the community.

The "Cruisin' the Conejo" ride will feature a menu of four road courses in and around the Conejo Valley, varying in difficulty from easy 21 and 35-mile cruises around Thousand Oaks to a demanding 100-mile classic "Century." A somewhat flatter 62-mile (half-metric) ride and a more challenging 68-miler with significant climbing will be available.

The selection of rides ensures that there will be a course of choice for every cyclist's taste.

All circuits start from the Skyworks parking lot at the cor

ner of Hillcrest and Lawrence drives in Newbury Park (exit north off the 101 freeway at Rancho Conejo Boulevard and follow the signs).

Online preregistration is encouraged by visiting www. cvcbike.org. Same-day registration opens at 6:30 a.m., with the first riders setting off at 7 a.m. Information is also available by calling (805) 961-2508.

"Cruisin' the Conejo" is a fully supported recreational road ride with food, water and aid rest stops at reasonable intervals provided by Boy Scout Troop 753 and cruising "SAG" support wagons out on the circuits operated by CVRC, the local ham radio club.

The event is a fun ride, not a race, and all traffic regulations will be followed. Helmets are required. Each course is clearly marked and route slips are provided to all riders.

Troop 753 will provide lunch for participants at the race's conclusion. The race concludes at the starting point in Newbury Park.
