Geologist to talk on Iceland phenomena

Geologist and teacher Mark Rickertsen, a 1983 graduate of California Lutheran University, will return to his alma mater to discuss Iceland's unusual geologic phenomena at 7:30 p.m. Fri., April 21 in the Nelson Room on the CLU campus at 60 W. Olsen Road, Thousand Oaks.

Admission is free for his program, presented by the American Scandinavian Foundation of Thousand Oaks.

In his talk, Rickertsen will discuss what attracted Vikings- who believed the island's large volcanic craters to be the entrance to the netherworld-to Iceland, and continues to attract tourists: thousands of hot springs, mud cauldrons, blistering hot rivers and giant geysers. Icelanders have harnessed their "beautiful but dangerous" island's geological fire to fuel energy plants and heat homes.

The talk will be illustrated with images of Iceland. For more information, call Fred Tonsing at (805) 492-4427.
