Looks for and finds the good in others

Like so many, 9/11 made me take a good hard look at what I value most in my life, especially while I still have it. I realized I truly value the goodness in humanity. When there's a crisis, like Sept. 11 or Hurricane Katrina, that's when people's altruistic colors show the best.

We all know that, but we tend to live our lives as if the only real good will in people comes out when there's a catastrophe.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

On the other hand, 9/11 caused us to become even more cautionary and skeptical of people than before.

As a result, we don't tend to see the good that's happening right in front of our eyes.

We live in an amazing community here in Conejo Valley, thanks to many people who make it their life's passion to do good things for others.

They aren't looking for gratitude, yet they deserve it.

Hence, I created "Tea and Gratitude--A Celebration in Recognition of Humanity's Goodwill."

It's a celebratory event over a tea-style luncheon, free of charge. It's my intent each month from March through October every year to seek out and give recognition to those special groups that do so much for others.

It's my way of giving back, and hopefully encouraging all of us to find more balance in our lives by looking for the goodness that we have right here in our own backyard.

This month "Tea and Gratitude" would like to recognize Many Mansions--a provider of housing and special services for low-income families in Ventura County. Many Mansions celebrates 25 years of service this year. It is my distinct honor to host these people in my home.

Thanks for being there and doing what you do. Brenda Cochran Thousand Oaks
