Concert will promote peace
Singers, songwriters and musicians will join their musical voices in support of peace in a concert at 7 p.m. Fri., March 31 at OneSpirit, Center for Conscious Living, 1756 Erringer Road, Simi Valley. Nearing the end of "Season for Nonviolence," the 64 days between the memorial anniversaries of Martin Luther King and Mahatma Gandhi, some of the finest singers and songwriters in Southern California will be on stage, performing songs that will promote peace and nonviolence "in our own homes, community and the world," according to the center.
The performers for the evening event are:
Gerald White, who thrills audiences with his versatility and his vocal artistry. As a studio singer he has credits on many major films including "Chicken Little," "Fantastic Four," "Polar Express," "Spiderman" and "Spiderman 2," and others.
Karen Mitchell is an accomplished singer/songwriter and is putting the finishing touches on a new album. "Karen's great heart and beautiful voice touch audiences in ways that few other singers can," said a center spokesperson. She is also the music director at the La Crescenta Church of Religious Science.
Faith Rivera is an Emmy Award-winning composer, singer, keyboard player, "and a passionate devotee of international humanitarianism." As a session singer she has worked with such artists as Luther Vandross, Jon Secada and Sheila E. She also continues to have her original music placed on television and in films, and has five releases of her own ranging from inspirational pop to salsa. Rivera was recently named the U.S. Music & Performing Arts Coordinator for Humanity's Team to organize uplifting concerts across the country. She was also honored with community service awards from the city and county of Los Angeles, California State Senate, and California State Assembly for her volunteerism.
Tom Burns is "an exceptional singer, a songwriter of tremendous diversity, and a thoroughly engaging and entertaining stage personality." He was a $100,000 winner on "Star Search" as the "Vocalist of the Year." Burns is also a professional drummer.
Harold Payne is an internationally recognized singer/songwriter. Several of his songs have reached the top five on Billboard's R&B, Dance & International music charts. He has had more than 100 recordings by artists ranging from Patti LaBelle to Rod Stewart to long time collaborator, Bobby Womack. Also, "Beverly Hills Cop II," "Splash" and "Summer Rental" are just a few of the feature films featuring his words and music.
Andy Howe is "one of the premier piano players in the country." He has worked with many notable musical performers and has numerous television credits including "The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson." He is currently producing recordings for a number of stars "and soon-to-be stars." He also, "with great verve and expertise," leads the band each Sunday at OneSpirit.
Dr. Dennis Merritt Jones, senior minister of OneSpirit, Center for Conscious Living, created the idea to produce this concert. Almost 30 years ago, he gave up a promising career as a professional singer/ songwriter to pursue the ministry. But music continues to be an important part of his life, and "his passion for world peace and good music are coming together in the creation of this concert."
Joe Dickey serves as music director at OneSpirit.
