Woman of the Year: Schlessinger

Radio talk show host Dr. Laura Schlessinger was recently named "Woman of the Year" for California's 19th state Senate District by Sen. Tom McClintock (RThousand Oaks). The award is presented annually to a woman from each district who has significantly contributed to her area.

Schlessinger has been offering advice infused with a strong sense of ethics, accountability and personal responsibility for more than 30 years, reaching about 12 million radio listeners weekly. She's a darling among conservatives and McClintock is one of them.

"Dr. Laura Schlessinger is the strongest voice of our generation on behalf of the institutions of marriage and family, the twin pillars of human society," said McClintock. Schlessinger has been nominated for induction into the Radio Hall of Fame. Among her achievements, she's the first and only woman to win the National Association of Broadcasters' Marconi Award for network/ syndicated personality. She's also a best-selling author of nine adult books and four children's books.

In the last several years, Schlessinger has designed and handcrafted jewelry for charitable causes, including Operation Family Fund, which provides financial assistance to families of military personnel killed or severely injured in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Woman of the Year ceremony was held Mon., March 20 in Sacramento. At the event, honorees from each of the 40 Senate districts were introduced and presented with award certificates.
