The Acorn’s 2006 Basketball Playoff Preview
Newbury Park Panthers
Marmonte League No. 1 Season record: 20-6, 14-0 league
Division IIA
Impact player: Kavita Goss
First-round opponent: Temple City, Rio Hondo League wild card
Outlook: Fueled by the talented combination of Goss (18.6 ppg, 7.2 rpg) and forward Arlene Harris (17.5 ppg, 7.3 rpg), the Panthers enter the postseason as the Division IIA’s top seed.
Newbury Park can score, rebound and play defense—NPHS averaged 11.1 steals per game.
Guard Chelsea Davis and forward Doris Park-Sherman are key role players for NPHS.
Panther head coach Nori Parvin has tons of playoff experience and should have her team ready to go come tipoff.
Their draw: Assuming they get by Temple City at home tonight, Newbury Park will play either Rio Mesa or Rosemead Saturday. The quarterfinals are Wednesday night.
Westlake Warriors
Marmonte League No. 2 Season record: 16-10, 10-4 league
Division IIAA Impact player: Lindsay Williams
First-round opponent: Santa
Barbara, Channel League No. 3
Outlook: The Warriors have won seven of eight games entering the postseason, including a big victory in the regular-season finale against Moorpark last Friday. Westlake’s only loss during that eight-game stretch was to Marmonte League champion Newbury Park.
Williams, a junior center, can be dominant at times. She’ll need to be on top of her game for Westlake to advance.
Guards Emma Grossman and Kathryn Scardino are also critical to the team’s success.
Their draw: Santa Barbara was a .500 team this season. Westlake should find a way to advance. A long road trip to Chino Hills could await in the second round. If WHS advances to the quarterfinals, top-seeded Troy should be waiting in the wings. Oaks Christian Lions
Frontier League No. 1 Season record: 17-8, 7-0 league
Division IVAA Impact player: Michelle Clark
Second-round opponent:
Paraclete or Bishop Union
Outlook: OCHS is seeded No. 2 in its division and enters the playoffs as a legitimate threat to win a CIF championship.
The Lions are led by Clark, the Frontier’s leading scorer (16.6 ppg), and sophomore guard Chelsea Carlisle (16 ppg). Danielle Chupp and Jennifer Sterling are key contributors as well.
Their draw: Oaks Christian received a first-round bye and won’t play until Saturday night at home against the winner of Paraclete/ Bishop Union. The division’s top seed, Marlborough, is on the opposite end of the bracket. That’s excellent news for OCHS.
Boys
Thousand Oaks Lancers
Marmonte League No. 1 (Tie) Season record: 23-4, 12-2 league
Division IA
Impact player: Matt Luft First-round opponent: Sultana,
Mojave River League No. 3
Outlook: TOHS won six of its last seven games down the stretch and was granted the Division IA No. 4 seed because of the strong finish.
The Lancers bring a nice mix of experience and youth to the court—they have six seniors, six juniors and a pair of sophomores on the roster.
The Harvard-bound Luft has been on top of his game lately.
Thousand Oaks will count on a deep front-court of Luft, Trevor Mustin, Wade Kegley, Andrew Coomes, Dylan Betancourt, Sean Taxter and Jake Poppen to supply points and rebounds.
Their draw: Mission Viejo or Canyon of Canyon Country likely awaits in the quarterfinals if the Lancers advance. They’re in the same bracket as topseeded Pasadena, but overall it’s not a terrible draw.
Westlake Warriors
Marmonte League No. 3 Season record: 16-9, 9-5 league
Division IIAA Impact player: Nick Slezak First-round opponent: Loyola,
Mission League No. 1 (Tie)
Outlook: The Warriors’ steady play got them the Marmonte’s third seed. But it was a Feb. 1 win on the road against rival Thousand Oaks that may have given Westlake the confidence it needs to compete in the postseason.
For WHS to be effective, players like Slezak, Matt Pino, Allen Scott and Erik Schneider all must contribute.
Their draw: Getting past Loyola Friday on the road will be a tall task. Loyola went 20-5 during the regular season and has reeled off nine straight wins.
Oaks Christian Lions
Frontier League No. 1 Season record: 15-10, 8-0 league
Division IVAA Impact player: Matt Hornbuckle
Second-round opponent:
La Salle or Kern Valley
Outlook: Hornbuckle led the team with 16 points per game. He’ll likely have to shoulder much of the Lions’ offensive load.
Watch out for sophomore center Matt Johnson. He’s 6-foot-6 and averaged 3.4 blocks per game during the regular season.
Their draw: A first-round bye and home game in the second round Friday night is a nice setup for OCHS. The prospect of playing top-seeded Campbell Hall in the quarterfinals is less attractive.
Newbury Park
Adventist Gators
Omega League No. 3
Season record: 14-3, 13-3 league
Division VAA Impact player: Pedro Armendariz
First-round opponent: Santa Clarita Christian, Heritage No. 2
Outlook: Armendariz led the Gators with 16.7 points and 9.8 rebounds per game this year.
He’s a 6-foot-4, 210-pound center who has the potential to put up monster numbers on any given night.
Two weeks ago against Pilgrim, Armendariz posted 35 points and 21 rebounds, both season highs.
NPA also gets consistent scoring contributions from Ben Gonzalez (9.2 ppg), Whitney Van Blargen (9.4 ppg, 6.9 rpg) and Cory Mitchell (7.4 ppg, 5.1 rpg).
Sophomore guard J.P. Tan led the Gators with 37 assists and was third on the squad with 23 steals.
The Gators enter the postseason as winners of 10 of their last 11 contests.
Their draw: NPA hit the road last night to take on Santa Clarita Christian, the No. 15 seed in Division VAA. Results weren’t available prior to press time.
The winner of last night’s game will take on top-ranked Hesperia Christian on the road during Friday’s second round. Hesperia Christian is 19-6 overall.
