When it comes to holiday shopping, it’s better late than never With only three days before Christmas, many of you are already done with your shopping. Some of us, however, still have plenty of shopping to do. We are the procrastinators of the world who live by the motto “Why do today what you can postpone until tomorrow, or better yet, the day after that?” Members of the Procrastinators Club of Conejo Valley, by the way, have been trying for 30 years to have their first meeting. They just can’t agree on the time or place or whether they should even have a meeting. There are lots of reasons to wait until the last minute for holiday shopping. We probably accomplished a lot while the rest of you were shopping. Yes sir, probably quite a bit. We asked our teenage daughter about it and she said, “Why shop for Mom when you can see a movie with your friends?” That’s the spirit. Consider, too, that late shoppers might just salvage a lackluster sales season for retailers. We can also help them get rid of white elephants. Maybe there are health benefits. Our cardiovascular systems are certainly going to get a workout on Christmas Eve as we scurry about buying on impulse. Any day now, we expect a medical expert to announce that stress is actually good for you. We can see the supermarket tabloid now: “108-year-old man credits stress for keeping him alive.” We know for sure that high blood pressure is more healthful than no blood pressure. By shopping at the 11th hour, we can disregard timeconsuming trivial matters like these: 1. Will they like it? 2. Is it the right size? 3. Do they even wear stuff like this? So while many of you enjoy your eggnog and fireplaces on Christmas Eve, the rest of us will be doing what we do best: waiting until the last possible moment and then shopping up a storm. If we’re buying for you, don’t worry. We’re good about keeping gift receipts.
We almost always need them. |
