Joggers, bicyclists need to use common sense Calling all runners and cyclists. First of all let me say, “I’m one of you.” I run and ride frequently, sometimes, like you, when it is dark or at dusk. I also commute about 40 miles each way to work each day and I am on the roads before the sun rises and as it sets. I am looking out for you, but are all motorists racing home and regularly exceeding the 45 mph speed limits on our local surfaces streets looking out for you? I think not. I have seen way too many of you wearing dark clothes, running with traffic and riding and running several abreast, sometimes close to the lines or in the traffic lanes. With the end of daylight savings time, and the onset of cooler weather, you are very hard to see, and I am looking for you, but is everyone else? There are many motorists leaving early, who don’t clean off their windows well, are talking on their cellphones, etc. and they don’t see you! Please consider changing your habits and follow a few common sense rules of the road: •If you will be out in dark or dusk, wear bright and/or reflective clothes. Many options are available. There is even a line of clothes covered with reflective material. Also, consider a light. There are some great small ones available. •Run against traffic. At least you can see if someone is going to hit you and get out of the way! It’s too late when running with traffic. •Ride with the traffic. Cyclists must travel in the same direction as traffic because they are considered to be just like any other vehicle. •Assume the motorists don’t see you. •Share the road and obey traffic signals •Always wear a helmet Thanks for reading and please be careful on the road.
