Judy Collins to sing on Saturday night

2005-12-08 / On The Town

Singer/songwriter Judy Collins, widely hailed for possessing a beautiful voice that moves easily from Bob Dylan folk songs to Stephen Sondheim show tunes, will perform a Christmas concert at 7:30 p.m. Sat., Dec. 10 in the Fred Kavli Theatre at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza, 2100 Thousand Oaks Blvd.

Westlake High School’s vocal ensemble and women’s choral will open for Collins. The school’s choirs will then serve as the singer’s backup choir throughout her performance. Collins’ 40-year career as a recording artist began as a piano prodigy performing classical works on the public stage at age 13.In the early ’60s she became part of the revival of folk music, switching from piano to guitar, and at age 22 released her first album.

Although she’s a respected songwriter herself who’s authored and recorded many poignant autobiographical songs, Collins iwell-known for her interpretations of works by others, including Joni Mitchell, and for her interest in and adaptations of traditional ballads with origins in Scottish, Irish and English folklore.
