Event to benefit sharks
Iemanya Oceanica will host its inaugural Charity Soiree from 6 to 10:30 p.m. Sat., Nov. 5 from Sherwood Country Club, 320 W. Stafford Road, Thousand Oaks.
The event will include a champagne reception, dinner with wine by Sherwood Country Club’s Executive Chef Alberto Vazquez, live and silent auction, interactive contests, live dance entertainment and a keynote speaker, the world’s top shark scientist and renowned author Dr. Jose Castro.
Regular tickets are $100, with VIP and sponsorship tickets available for $200 to $5,000.
Iemanya is an Oak Park-based marine conservation nonprofit organization dedicated to the conservation of sharks and rays.
Sharks are extremely vulnerable to overexploitation because they grow slowly and have very few offspring. In the past 15 years, the number of sharks has dropped about 80 percent. Experts estimate that 100 million sharks are killed annually and many sharks are now in danger of extinction.
Iemanya is a team of international scientists, educators and environmentalists committed to protecting marine life, while addressing the socio-economic effects of conservation within the communities that depend on marine resources.
