BILL SPARKES/Acorn Newspapers FEARSOME FOURSOME—From left, Brittney Ondrejko (Westlake), Hillary Packard (Thousand Oaks), Hannah Kim (Newbury Park) and Sara Crist (Agoura) were the top four finishers at the Marmonte League Championship. Packard won the two-day event after shooting a 152. At the beginning of the girls’ golf season, Westlake’s Brittney Ondrejko wasn’t playing up to her own expectations.

She had been involved in a car accident on Labor Day while visiting San Diego to play in a pre-tournament practice round. The accident left her car totaled and forced Ondrejko to spend a night in the hospital because of a concussion.

When she returned to the golf course about a week later, Ondrejko struggled to regain her previous form.

By Tuesday afternoon at Simi Hills Golf Course, nearly two months after her accident, Ondrejko was back in top shape. In fact, she was better than ever.

Ondrejko’s 77 was the lowest round of the day and earned the Westlake senior a secondplace finish at the two-day Marmonte League Tournament.

“I played good, I’m happy,” Ondrejko said. “I’ve never shot that low. I’ve never broken 80. And I shot one-under on the back (nine), and I’ve never done that before either.”

Thousand Oaks senior Hillary Packard won the singles title with a two-day total of 152, including shooting a tournament-low 74 last Thursday afternoon at Los Robles Greens during the first day of the 36-hole tournament.

“I’m pretty excited because I’ve been working hard all year and all summer,” Packard said. “I took second last year, so I really wanted to get first this year.”

Packard, who was named tournament Most Valuable Player, credited her chipping and putting for her strong play throughout the tournament.

Newbury Park’s Hannah Kim finished third with a two-day total of 159.

“Last year I finished in sixth place, so it was nice that I improved,” Kim said.

Sara Crist, an exchange student from Sweden who is spending her senior year at Agoura, finished forth after shooting a 168.

All four girls will move on to the CIF-Southern Section singles championships in early November.

Those who just missed the top four were: Simi Valley’s Nicole Pechi (169), Katie Deutsch of Westlake (175), Agoura’s Robyn Fischer (177) and Jessie Jones from Calabasas (179).

“In other sports, normally you’re sitting on opposite sides as far as teams and stuff,” Jones said. “But with golf, once you finish, you’re all together and you can all bond. It’s really fun.”

The Westlake Warriors won the team portion of the tournament after posting a collective score of 896.

During the tournament, golfers from the eight league schools were placed in groups of five players each. There were nine groups total, and the top eight scores from each school comprised the total team score.

Thousand Oaks placed second with a 926. Simi Valley ended up in third place (952), finishing just ahead of the Newbury Park Panthers (956).

Agoura (958), Royal (986), Moorpark (1,019) and Calabasas (undisclosed) rounded out the remaining four Marmonte schools.

“It’s a great win,” Westlake coach Dave Costley said. “We were in fourth place in the home-and-home, so to come in and win this tournament by this much. . . .our kids really rose to the occasion today.”

Although CIF berths for the singles players were determined during the league tournament, the four automatic Marmonte playoff spots won’t be finalized until next Tuesday, when all of the remaining league matches have concluded.

The league tournament counts 75 percent against determining the final league standings and playoff seedings. Regular-season results count 25 percent toward the final Marmonte standings.

Heading into the final league matches of the regular season, Thousand Oaks appears to be in the best shape to capture the league championship.

But the Lancers will need a little bit of help from Agoura, which takes on Simi Valley Tuesday afternoon. If the Pioneers win, it’s likely that T.O. and Simi will split the Marmonte title.

Westlake is also in the mix, but they’ll need a lot of help.

The Warriors, Newbury Park, Agoura and Royal are all battling for the two remaining playoff spots.

Moorpark and Calabasas are a little too far behind in the standings to make a run at the postseason this year.
