BILL SPARKES/Acorn Newspapers SWARMING TO THE BALL CARRIER—Moorpark’s Ryne Intlekofer goes airborne on a punt return midway through the third quarter of last weekend’s game against Newbury Park, while Panthers Justin Ciarza, No. 44, Shane McClashen, No. 7, and Luis Soria converge to make the tackle. Outlook: When asked last week if running back Jeff Rapoport would return this season after suffering an ankle injury early in the year, Westlake head coach Jim Benkert said “no.”
In that case, it must have been a miracle that the senior ball carrier was back on the field during the Warriors’ 44-14 victory over Agoura.
With Rapoport, Marlon Bills and Jeff Miller all playing together for the first time this season without injuries, Westlake looked like a completely different team, and one that could still squeak into the postseason if everything goes their way down the stretch. They’ll look to inch closer to .500 against Calabasas.
Outlook: Newbury Park continues to find a way to win the close ballgames, and that’s why the Panthers currently sit atop the Marmonte standings with three games to play.
Last weekend, Moorpark ran for 250 yards despite having super sophomore running back Darrell Scott sidelined with an ankle injury.
This Friday, the Panthers will match up against the league’s leading rusher, Curtis Marsh, who has 1,032 yards rushing on the year.
Royal plays a physical brand of football, much like Moorpark, and will try to dominate the line of scrimmage.
Panther wideout Jordan Cameron should be back after being limited last week with the flu.
