Women’s group to discuss great Jewish songwriters

The National Council of Jewish Women/Los Angeles Section’s Beverly West Division will host a discussion, “From Shul to Cool,” by author Jacqueline Bassan at 1:30 p.m. Thurs., Nov. 3 at 543 N. Fairfax Ave., Los Angeles.

Bassan is the author of “From Shul to Cool,” a book that looks at the history of a musical era rich with Jewish roots. Her discussion will include such noted songwriters as Irving Berlin, Harold Arlen, the Gershwins, Jerome Kern and other artists “who created music of passion, wit, poignancy and beauty,” according to Rachel Schneider of the National Council of Jewish Women.

“Ms. Bassan’s research illuminates these artists as they both mirrored and molded the spirit of the nation in the 1900s and unified America in times of joy and grief, largely inspired by an unsung source: their Judaism,” said Schneider.

Admission is free and limited free parking is available. Dessert and coffee will be served. Reservations are recommended and may be made by calling Schneider at (323) 852-8512.
