CLU to host peace symposium

2005-09-22 / Schools

California Lutheran University (CLU) will host a symposium on “Peacebuilding in the Global Era” from Tues., Oct. 4 through Fri., Oct. 7.  The programs and presentations will be held in Preus-Brandt Forum and Samuelson Chapel on the campus at 60 W. Olsen Road, Thousand Oaks.

In a globalizing world, nations face unprecedented opportunities as well as dangers, according to Dr. Nathan Tierney, professor of philosophy and coordinator of the symposium. Many problems have moved beyond the ability of single nationstates to resolve them: war and terrorism, hunger and poverty, the environment, world health and trade, population movements and refugees, communication and education. In such a world, peacebuilding is the cornerstone of progress, he said.

CLU will host the four-day symposium of lectures, faculty and student panels, religious services, videos and discussion sessions in hope of sowing seeds of peace. Keynote speaker Fr. Cedric Prakash, director of the Prashant Center for Human Rights, Justice and Peace in Gujarat, India, will speak on the “Challenges to Peacebuilding in India” at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Wed., Oct. 5 in Samuelson Chapel.

Admission is free. For information, call Tierney at (805) 4933232 or e-mail tierney@clunet.edu.
