Paskow to lead military services

Rabbi Shimon Paskow, retired rabbi of Temple Etz Chaim in Thousand Oaks, has volunteered to conduct Jewish High Holy Days services for all personnel in the Armed Forces.

All the religious services will be presented at the chapel at Vanderberg Air Force Base. Master Sgt. Teri Brady from Space Operations is coordinating the program. Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year of 5766, will begin Mon., Oct. 3 at sundown. Services at the base will begin at 7:30 p.m. On Rosh Hashanah morning, Oct. 4, services will begin at 9:30 a.m. and will include the reading of the Torah and the blowing of the shofar (ram’s horn).

Yom Kippur will begin Wed., Oct. 12 with the chanting of Kol Nidre at 7:30 p.m. Yom Kippur services on Oct. 13 will start at 9:30 a.m. and continue for the entire day. Yizkor Memorial Prayers will take place at 4 p.m.

Yom Kippur will conclude with Neilah, Havdalah and a breaking of the fast. Assisting Paskow will be William Koepcke, who recently retired as deputy attorney for the city of Los Angeles.

Paskow previously served as an army chaplain, attaining the rank of colonel, and served Temple Etz Chaim for more than 30 years.
