Hurricane relief efforts continue Thousand Oaks High School students hope to raise $15,000 in 15 days for hurricane relief efforts through several activities. The school’s International Relief Club, in conjunction with the Associated Student Body, is hosting a blood drive from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. today, Thurs., Sept. 22; a relief concert tomorrow night at 7 p.m. featuring several local bands; a rummage sale beginning at noon on Sat., Sept. 24; and ongoing doughnut and bake sales. In addition, local businesses are being sought to match whatever funds students raise, according to IRC President Adam Potischman. All events are being held at the school at 2323 N. Moorpark Road. For more information call (805) 495-7491. As part of his Eagle Scout project, Ryan Krebs of Boy Scout Troop No. 604 in Moorpark is collecting food for Hurricane Katrina victims. Residents are invited to drop off nonperishables during a rummage sale being held from 7 a.m. to noon on Sat., Sept. 24 at the Moorpark Presbyterian Church, 13950 Peach Hill Road. The sale is also being held to raise funds for hurricane relief. Krebs plans to send the donated food to the Children’s Hunger Fund, based in Pacoima, which will then forward the food to the Gulf Coast. Krebs suggests donations of the following items: canned meat products (6-12 oz.), rice (16 oz. bag or box), pinto beans (16 oz. bag), pasta (16 oz.), tomato paste or sauce (can), green vegetables (14-16 oz. can), canned fruits (14-16 oz.), salted nuts (3-6 oz. bag), small cracker box, chewy granola or nutrition bars (6-10 bar box), small bottle of cooking oil (no glass bottles). The community is invited to participate in the “Relief Olympics” to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sat., Oct. 15 at Lacombe Martial Arts & Health Center, 31848-50 Village Center Road in Westlake Village’s First Neighborhood Center. All proceeds will be donated to the American Red Cross. The Relief Olympics will consist of an obstacle course (complete with sit-ups, push-ups, kicking, balancing, etc.) and short walk/run for men, women and children of all ages. Corporate and individual sponsors at all levels are being sought in addition to participants in the Olympics. On Fri., Oct. 14 the Health Center will offer $25 chiropractic adjustments and $10 chair massages from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. with proceeds being donated to The Red Cross.
