The problem: Motorists are currently allowed to make a right turn from both directions on Lynn Road onto West Gainsborough Road and Avenida de Los Arboles on a red light. The three problem right-turn lanes allow little visibility of the traffic already traveling on Gainsborough and Avenida de Los Arboles. Motorists who turn right on a red are opening themselves up to a possible collision with those vehicles traveling along Gainsborough and Avenida de Los Arboles.
Immediate action: The city of Thousand Oaks will look at the locations and determine if any action should be taken. Jim Mashiko, Thousand Oaks senior civil engineer, said he’d never heard the concern before. “Any time someone calls in an issue about right turn on red, we’ll go out there and check it to see what can be done,” Mashiko said. “But we also have to look at the flipside: it’s still up to the driver to use their discretion—if they feel it’s not a safe movement, they don’t have to turn.” Mashiko added that Lynn Road traffic, by default, will most of the time get a green light. “When there’s a vehicle on Arboles or Gainsborough waiting to be served, then they’ll get a green,” Mashiko said. Lynn Road traffic rarely, and only very temporarily, has to wait on a red light, he said. According to Mashiko, statistics that date back to 2003 show that no collisions have been reported relating to right turns from Lynn Road onto Gainsborough or Avenida de Los Arboles from either direction.
