Amazed that only one trustee heard the crowd

What happened on June 28 at the Conejo Valley Unified School District Board of Education meeting? I was there and was awestruck when four of the five board members voted without pause to adopt the Glencoe ninth-edition health book for our high school freshmen after a clear majority of parents communicated concern regarding the language of the book.

How can these board members ignore the parents whose children they are supposed to be serving? May I remind them that these are our children?   There is obviously more to this story—these board members didn’t even want to hear from the overflowing audience. There were so many concerned parents and community members that a board member suggested that everyone only get two of the three minutes usually allotted to them, and then trustee Mike Dunn spoke up and said we had a right to three minutes and he would like to hear all three minutes from everyone.

They sat through the speakers only because they had to and then refused to read the comment cards which would further clarify that an overwhelming majority of parents disagree with the language in which this text defines marriage. I hope that our local journalists will be able to uncover the motivation behind these votes.

I don’t need an explanation to know how I will vote when these members are up for reelection, but the parents of this community deserve an explanation. Cheryl Bisera  Newbury Park

The majority of trustees went with the recommendation of the textbook committee.
