Award-winning blues artist to perform in Ventura

Award-winning blues artist Janiva Magness will sing selections from her latest CD, “Bury Him at the Crossroads,” at a 7:30 p.m. “Music Under the Stars” concert on Sat., Aug. 20 at Olivas Adobe, 4200 Olivas Park Drive, Ventura. The historic site’s courtyard will open at 6:30 p.m., and concertgoers may bring card tables, picnics and beverages. Chairs will be provided.

Born and raised in Detroit and now residing in Los Angeles, Magness has won the B.B. King Award for Musical Excellence, the Jim Croce Award for Outstanding Achievement in Rhythm & Blues, and is a two-time WC Handy Award nominee. She has performed at blues festivals around the world and starred in the Tony-nominated Broadway production of “It Ain’t Nothin’ But the Blues” at the David Geffen Theater in Los Angeles.

Her current CD is a blend of country/roots-rock music, vintage Motor City rhythm and blues, romantic soul and folk.
