Minds made up on CVUSD Board

It should disturb a lot of parents that the elected officials on the Conejo Valley Board of Education begrudingly heard the majority of the 45 speakers at the meeting respectfully request they vote against adopting the Glencoe Health textbook, refused to read the 100 comment cards requesting they vote against adopting this textbook, and sought to vote for the textbook prior to any discussion on the issue.

The board’s actions indicates they formed their decision prior to the meeting and public input.

Will this be how the board handles future controversial issues?  Will their next step initiate comprehensive sexual health education, including alternative lifestyle education, to the lower grades, even the kindergarten level, as state law allows?  Will parents be allowed to opt their ninth-graders out of a lesson on marriage set up in the textbook to be gender neutral?

Would the board even address these questions?

California voters defined marriage as between a man and a woman under Proposition 22.  Textbooks that include marriage as a topic should reflect state law. Suzanne Knorr Newbury Park
