Local teen attends civics conference
State Sen. Tom McClintock
and Jonathon Ronald Evans
Jonathon Ronald Evans, a
senior this fall at Newbury Park
High School, recently attended
the California Boys State held
at Cal State Sacramento from
June 18 to 25.
At the conference, Evans
passed a mock bar exam and was
elected a city councilman in one
of 29 virtual cities. He visited
state Assemblywoman Audra
Strickland (R-Thousand Oaks)
and state Sen. Tom McClintock
(R-Thousand Oaks) in their offices at the state capital.
“I learned a lot about the
working of city and state government,” said Evans. Participants
set up their own cities, elected
their own officials and settled disputes through a court system run
by the representatives, he said.
Evans is the son of Ron and
Janet Evans. He’s a member of
the California Scholarship Federation, NPHS concert choir, the
Highly Dubious barbershop
quartet, the Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter-day Saints and
is also an Eagle Scout.
Evans was selected as a representative by American Legion
Post No. 741. According to the
American Legion, the purpose
of Boys State is to “provide citizenship training for a selected
group of high school boys chosen for outstanding citizenship,
scholarship, leadership and interest in government.”
