Camp retreat available for cancer victims, families

The Ventura County-based Cancer Hope Foundation will host its fifth annual Camp Keepsake weekend camp retreat from Oct. 7 to 9 at Camp Mt. Crags in Malibu Canyon in Calabasas. This year’s theme is “Hollywood Nights.” The camp, offered free of charge, is open to adult cancer patients and their families.

The camp’s purpose is to provide adults with cancer and up to five members of their families and/or friends an opportunity to spend time away from the hectic and often stressful routine of doctor visits and treatments, according to Christopher Roos, the foundation’s president. Participants may choose from a variety of camp-related activities and spatype amenities including campfires, music, crafts, games, dancing, support groups, massages and facials. The setting is “woodsy,” but organizers are always mindful of the safety and special needs of the campers, Roos added.

The deadline to submit an application is Sept. 1. All completed applications are reviewed and considered by the Camp Keepsake selection committee. Invitations to attend the camp are then distributed.
