School board’s vote on textbook an embarrassment First and foremost I want to thank Mike Dunn for his brave and lawful stand he made to adopt the Texas version of the ninthgrade Glencoe Health textbook for Conejo Valley Unified School District. We need more trustees like Mike. This was probably one of the biggest fires Mike (a firefighter) was unable to extinguish. The pressure on Thousand Oaks has been brewing for over 10 years. The lid needed opening to let in the air but to either voter apathy or voter ignorance, the same board members who brought us outcome-based education in the mid-’90s have now brought us a new definition of marriage. What’s next? That will be 2015 when the next health textbook adoption takes place and then after that 2525, the Age of Aquarius that Cathy Carlson referred to in her comments to the board at the meeting. What was even worse was the fact that every board member who voted for the “new definition” refused to discuss any of their reasons until after the vote. Then they brought out their typed written explanations on why they voted the way they did. Give me a break. What were they afraid of—500 or more people coming to the meeting? If I had more space and time, I could enumerate. Anyway, we saw and heard many dedicated citizens willing to speak up and with passion. Finally, they are awakening to the big lies. It’s time for them to come forward. The time has come to organize a recall of those who refused to uphold the law of California— Prop. 22—that the definition of marriage is between a man and a woman. The ninth-grade text they voted to select was the politically correct California version absent the above definition. Be sure to watch on cable TV reruns of the meeting. The tape will run on Saturday at noon. When you view the tape, you will notice how eloquent the people spoke who wanted the definition of marriage to remain traditional. You will hear the applause. You will notice the rudeness of the left. You will notice the decision of the board was made before the meeting even started and they read their responses and refused to give them prior to the vote. And who are they beholden to? Unions? It is a sad day in Thousand Oaks. Elaine McKearn Thousand Oaks McKearn served for one fouryear term on the CVUSD Board of Education starting in December 1994. She wasn’t reelected. |
