New West Symphony offers camp

Students entering third to fifth grade this fall are invited to explore the world of classical music at the New West Symphony’s second annual summer camp, “Overtures, Opus 2.” Camp is scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon, Monday through Friday, July 25 to 29, at Glenwood School, 1135 Windsor Drive, Thousand Oaks. The tuition is $100 per child and includes snacks. The deadline for registration is Wed., July 13.

“We use creative, hands-on activities to introduce the students to the basics of classical music,” said Lynn Decker-Mahin, education director for the New West Symphony.

Participants do not need prior musical experience. They will rotate through seven different sessions each day, which include instrument building, learning to play the recorder, exposure to classical music and basic theory, garage band (playing together as a group with instruments made during camp and found in the garage and kitchen), having a handson experience with orchestral instruments, and exploring movements from the Delsarte Theory of Movement that correlate to the families of instruments.
