UCLA to host international theatre presentations

2005-06-30 / On The Town

UCLA Live has announced the lineup for its 2005–06 Fourth International Theatre Festival, showcasing an array of six groundbreaking productions from or inspired by countries including France, Poland, Uganda, Italy and Britain.

Running from October through December, UCLA Live’s Theatre Festival serves as a portal for audiences to experience excellent, provocative and significant international work. By serving as a launch pad for new theater on the West Coast, the festival helps define Los Angeles’ place on the cultural map. The festival stretches artistic and geographic boundaries by presenting adventurous artists of worldwide stature, many of whom are new to U.S. and West Coast audiences.

The 2005–06 Theatre Festival will feature a variety of North American and Los Angeles premieres and a West Coast company debut. Not to be missed is the highly anticipated return of the United Kingdom’s Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in November with an “original practices” production of “Measure for Measure.”

Other highlights include the festival opener in October, when French film actress Isabelle Huppert offers a different interpretation of Sarah Kane’s wrenching “4.48 Psychose,” which gripped UCLA Live audiences last year, followed by the West Coast debut of Poland’s Song of the Goat theater company with “Chronicles: A Lamentation.”

Also in October is Italy’s Piccolo Teatro di Milano with the commedia dell’arte masterpiece, “Arlecchino, Servant of Two Masters,” and the powerful “Biro,” which charts the plight of a Ugandan military man with

David Sefton, director of UCLA Live, who searches the world for the newest and highest quality dramatic work to bring to Los Angeles, said, “With UCLA Live’s International Theatre Festival, my goal is to showcase the best work on the entire planet. We want audiences to discover, embrace and go beyond any theater experience they have ever had.

This year, as before, the festival reaches both ends of the spectrum, from historical excellence to the remarkably innovative.”
