Mexico must change its policy on extraditing criminals
I recently read a story headlined “Mexico can’t be a safe haven for cop killers.” It had to do with Mexico’s refusal to extradite Armando Garcia, the accused killer of Dep. David March.
The supposed solution, as usual in our government, is to pass another law, H.R. 2363, which will let countries like Mexico know that we will consider the refusal to extradite cop killers to be a crime against the U.S. and will bring “the full resources of the federal government to bear to seek justice.” That should result in a good laugh for the Mexican government The last thing we need is another law, which will probably be overturned in the World Court anyway.
I have a much better solution— we give Mexico approximately $1.3 billion per year in foreign aid.
Instead of more new laws and instead of trying to get Mexico to ignore their view of the illegality of the death penalty, why don’t we just announce that we will be withholding a year of aid for each day that the extradition is delayed? I’ll bet if that announcement was made this afternoon, Mr. Garcia would be in Los Angeles this evening.
A last thought: the story was written by Congressmen Adam Schiff and David Dreier. I wonder how they voted on the foreign aid to Mexico.
