Head coach Jeff Klamecki said he’s seen plenty of talent come through the ranks during his 10 years coaching in the Westlake-Agoura Girls Softball Association (WAGS).

But few teams have been as talented top-to-bottom as this season’s Hurricanes of the 14-and-under division.

"This is about as a good a team as I’ve ever had," said Klamecki, who works in downtown Los Angeles for the sheriff’s transportation bureau. "We got lucky in the draft. I did my homework and we got a lot of good players that other coaches didn’t know about. We ended up putting together just a really solid team."

The Hurricanes, who are made up of 12 eighth-graders, recently completed the regular season without a loss, registering a record of 14-0-1, a rare feat in the ultra-competitive world of WAGS.

"(Going undefeated) doesn’t happen too often," Klamecki said. "The girls just never really had an off night."

In the final game of the regular season, the Hurricanes secured the division title by defeating their opponent in the bottom of the eighth, 4-3, on a game-winning hit by Breanna Vergess.

"We were thrilled for her," Klamecki said. "It was quite a game and quite an end to the regular season."

The Hurricanes are currently competing in the double-elimination WAGS postseason tournament.

When asked if he thinks these girls will be heard about next year as freshman at Agoura, Oak Park and Westlake high schools, the deputy and head coach gave a defiant, "Yes."

"Somebody is going to be lucky to have them," he said.

Klamecki’s daughter, Kathryn, is a member of the Hurricanes. He started coaching when his older daughter, Cara, joined the league.
