Winning season for cheer teams

Members of the Elite Cheer All-Stars competed April 1 through April 3 at the Anaheim Convention Center for the annual United Spirit Association (USA) All-Star Nationals. The Junior and High School teams placed third in the advanced division. The Pee-Wee and Elementary teams won first place in the youth division. The teams performed pyramids, gymnastics, dance and partner stunting.

The Pee-Wee and Elementary team members include Carleigh Gelnar, Jenna Caputo, Crysten Kurland, Haley Thompson, Deborah Banner, Paige Duran, Jackie Earle, Lindsey Hulsebus, Danica Rozanski and Selia Ririe.

The three-day event included a preliminary competition, a trip to Disneyland and California Adventure and the final competition on Sunday. The teams qualified at a regional competition that was held in January at UC Irvine.

The teams work out two to three times a week at Monarch’s Gymnastics in Newbury Park and have competed with one another since early January.

Tryouts for the Elite Cheer All-Stars for the 2005-06 season are this month. The teams are coached by Carolyn Ann Purkey and David Sanchez.
