GOP women to learn about Afghanistan

The Thousand Oaks Republican Women, Federated will host a luncheon meeting beginning with boutiques at 11 a.m. Thurs., May 19 at the Westlake Village Inn, 31943 Agoura Road, Westlake Village. There will be a luncheon at noon followed by the program, titled "Inside Afghanistan."

Guest speaker Bonita Chamberlin, who has lived in Afghanistan for many years working as a geologist, will discuss the culture and history of the region. She has taught Afghan women how to utilize the precious gems of the region to create jewelry and artifacts.

Proceeds from sales at the boutiques will be donated to Afghanistan to help establish a school, healthcare clinics, reforestation and irrigation programs and to hire a female doctor.

The cost of the luncheon is $32. The event is open to the community and men are also welcome to attend. For reservations and more information, please call (818) 889-4839.
