Alzheimer’s conference to help caregivers, others in healthcare

The annual spring education conference, "Enhancing Relationships in Alzheimer’s Care," will be offered from 8:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wed., May 11 at Los Robles Regional Medical Center’s East Campus, 150 Via Merida, Thousand Oaks. Registration will start at 7:30 a.m. The cost is $35 to $50 and includes CEUs for healthcare professionals.

The conference will offer the latest research updates and information on Alzheimer’s and provide tools and insights to improve relationships between caregivers, patients and doctors throughout the course of the illness, both in the home and following placement. The sessions offer education and support to family members, caregivers of people with dementia and healthcare professionals.

The keynote speaker is Dr. Steven Russak, director of the Kaiser Permanente geriatric program, Thousand Oaks. In his presentation, "Blending Research and Practice," Russak will discuss the latest developments in Alzheimer’s and dementia research and highlight ways to improve quality of care through enhanced doctor-patient relationships.

Educator Linda J. Hewett, Psy.D., assistant clinical professor and co-director/supervising neuropsychologist of UCSF Fresno Alzheimer’s and Memory Center, will discuss "Intimacy and Sexuality in Alzheimer’s Care."

A panel on "Enhancing Relationships" will discuss optimizing relationships through compassionate caregiving, bringing families together and maintaining relationships after placement.
