Redwood kids win contest
Redwood Middle School’s seventh-grade team of 21 students placed first in the 13th annual statewide Thinking Cap Quiz Bowl academic competition with a score of 98 percent.
This year, 40 seventh- and eighth-grade teams from throughout California competed.
The teams faced a battery of 100 questions in a computer-based quiz format that tested their knowledge, cooperation, accuracy and speed on a variety of subjects.
Team members included Nick Englund, Courtney Adler, Jessica Moxley, Jennifer Reinus, Dalton Stout, More Song, Nolan Fulton, Kathryn Irwin, Emily Arndt, Ali Skewes-Cox, Scott Tankard, Ben Longawa, Ben Moon, Andrew Mah, Behdod Katebian, Sean McMinn, Andrew Serf, Sasha Piergeorge, Sam Reynolds, Suzanne Jennett and Trina Bowman.
The students were honored at the Conejo Valley Unified School District board meeting earlier this month, where they were presented with a team trophy and certificates.
The eighth-grade team of 12 students placed second in their division.
Marilyn Zick has been coaching the first-place teams from Redwood for the past eight years.
This year she was assisted by Jacquie Van Wagner.
