Water may taste different, but it’s safe

Ventura county residents, including those who live in Thousand Oaks, Oak Park, Moorpark and Simi Valley, may have noticed a change in the taste of their tap water since Tuesday.

That’s because the water, usually supplied by the Calleguas Water District, is temporarily coming from a different supplier while the Calleguas pipeline is shutdown to make improvements for water system reliability.

Calleguas is a member agency of Metropolitan Water District, which gets its supplies through an aqueduct from the Sacramento River Delta.

Until the improvements are completed on March 3, residents will be getting their water from the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. LADWP uses a different process to disinfect its water. Calleguas normally treats its water with chloramines while LADWP uses free chlorine residual.

The free chlorine residuals could cause the water to taste and smell different, but this will not affect the quality or safety of drinking water, according to water district officials.
