Walking to school In response to Puffin Law’s letter, if the (school) congestion made things safer, this topic would not really be an issue. When not congested with parents’ cars, the entire roadway would become much more visible and the likelihood of a pedestrian being hit decreases enormously. The kids can see the cars and the drivers can see the kids. If children obey the traffic laws and are attentive while crossing, they themselves can guarantee they won’t be run over by a car. As for children disappearing, although most kidnap victims are taken by a legally separated parent, I agree this is a real concern that should be discussed with children. I think that most children can outrun an adult long enough to get somewhere public and safe. The problem is that children are often tricked to enter a vehicle or house. Proper discussion and precaution should eliminate most of this concern. There are always more excuses but if people behave responsibly, walking really is a better, safer solution. Although, as the recent front- page article quotes Dr. Baarstad, "Today our culture is one of driving the kids," I realize I’m an idealist. It’s a shame that the idea of walking to school has become outlandish. Joe Testa Thousand Oaks |
