Learn about Russian history at Ventura County Museum

Four hundred years of Russian history will be explored in the exhibition "The Perils of Empire: Russia from Ivan the Terrible to Stalin," on display from Jan. 4 through May 1 in the Smith Gallery at the Ventura County Museum of History & Art, 100 E. Main St., in Ventura.

Three dozen one-quarter life-size Russian figures created by artist George Stuart will be displayed. The collection features the figures of the first Russian tsar, Ivan the Terrible (c. 1530-1584), and his wife, Anastasia Romanova (c. 1530-1569). Anastasia is credited with helping curb Ivan’s "wanton displays" of power, but she died young—leaving her husband to become "one of the most notorious figures in history."

The tragedy of the Romanov family legacy would come to an end more than 300 years later as their last descendants, Tsar Nicholas II (c. 1868-1918), his wife Alexandra Feodorovna (1872-1918) and their children were executed under an order by Vladimir Lenin (c. 1870-1924).

Stuart is noted for his attention to detail on the meticulous wardrobes and facial expressions of his historical figures. Of particular note is the intricate beadwork on Anastasia’s headpiece.

Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. Admission is $1 to $4; free for museum members. For directions and more information, call (805) 653-0323 or visit www.venturamuseum.org.
