Having fun
with April Fools’ Day

Today is April Fools’ Day so we decided to publish a couple of bogus stories to have a little fun. One of the stories is on page 1 and the other is inside. You won’t have a problem deciding which ones are fictional because they’re way over the top. We also have disclaimers in italics at the end of the two of them so you’ll know for sure.

Our idea to have fun with April Fools’ Day isn’t unique.

Years ago, Sports Illustrated printed a story in an April 1 issue about a rookie Mets pitcher who threw faster than anybody in the history of baseball. The whole story was a fabrication.

Moreover, the Harvard Lampoon has occasionally printed tongue-in-cheek mockups of several publications. The magazines looked identical to real ones, but the content and even some of the advertisements were in jest.

And yes, we also have several phony ads in this edition. They’re on a page with no other ads, so they’re easy to find.

As a dedicated community newspaper, we do our best every week to deliver local news and information that’s important to you. But we also have a sense of humor and can laugh at ourselves and with others.

That’s our intent today.

We offer our gratitude to those officials who played along, and who, in some cases, even offered their own outrageous ideas or quotes.

Let’s never forget that elected officials also have a sense of humor.
