East beats West, 27-7
By Wayne Harrison

MICHAEL COONS/T.O.A. OUT OF SIGHT--Jesse Ainsworth of Thousand Oaks kicks off during the 30th annual East/West High School All-Star Football game at Royal High School in Simi Valley. East beat the West, 27-7.

Corey Mazza of Thousand Oaks High School caught two touchdown passes, his Lancer teammate, Jesse Ainsworth, kicked two field goals and Justin Cox, of Newbury Park, caught one touchdown pass, to help lead the East all-stars to a 27-7 win over the West all-stars in the 30th Annual East/West High School All-Star Football Game Sunday.

The game, sponsored by the Ventura Downtown Lions Club and the Ventura County Football Coaches Association, was played at Royal High School in Simi Valley.

Ainsworth, who will kick for Arizona State next year, and Mazza, who will play at Harvard, said it was fun to get to together with guys who were opponents during their high school football careers.

"I was commenting before the game how (Kyle) Uebelhardt and some of the other guys, I’ve only played against them," said Ainsworth, "and now they’re on my team. It’s cool to play for the same team and I was glad we were able to win."

As was his trademark at Thousand Oaks, Ainsworth’s kickoffs during the game carried well into the end zone, or actually out of the end zone, and the West team was unable to return them.

It was the last chance for Ainsworth and Mazza to be teammates, but also the chance to be teammates with other area standouts.

"It’s cool because you know these guys names from reading the newspapers," said Mazza. "You feel like you know them because you’ve heard so much about them. You’re enemies in league, but when you get together you realize they’re the same as you. We had a lot of fun together.

"I wish we could have three or four all-star games," Mazza added.

Mazza said the next game he plays, though, would be for Harvard against Holy Cross.

Domenic Foli, of Newbury Park High School, will attend San Diego State next year. He was a little surprised by the unselfishness of his all-star teammates.

"None of the guys has big egos ," Foli said. "They’re good guys to play with, real nice guys. When you play against each other during the regular season it’s a lot different. They hate you when you play against them, but here they’re really good guys."

What will it take to succeed at the next level of football?

"I’ve got to work a lot harder and get a lot bigger," Foli said.

His brother, Anthony Foli, a former Newbury Park star, who will be a senior at San Diego State next year, thinks Domenic is already on his way.

"He’s getting bigger, he’s finally filling out," said Anthony Foli, 6-foot-4, 285 pounds, about Domenic who is 6-4, 240. "I’m excited to have him come down. I’ll show him the ropes and get him used to things. I think he’ll fit right in."

Meanwhile, Anthony will play offensive guard and hopes to play pro football after next season.

"I switched positions last year from tackle, and I’m trying to gain a little more weight," Foli said. "Playing offensive guard is my best chance of playing afterwards. With my speed and quickness they like me there."

Cox will run track at Northern Arizona next fall and he may try to walk on as a football player.

"They used to be rivals but now we can build friendships," Cox said about his all-star teammates. And about Northern Arizona he said, "They have that high altitude training so I’m really looking forward to trying that out."

Other area players in the game were T.O.’s Ryan Sandlin, Mike Sueoka and Chris Wilcox, Westlake’s Kenneth Mackins, Glenn Martin, Rob Daniel, Merrill Mullaly, Zach Verdin and Peter Wangerin, and from Oaks Christian, Adam Richter.
