Week No. 7 roundup
Newbury Park breaks records while losing By Steve Ames Special to the T.O. Acorn Head coach George Hurley and the Newbury Park football team will be shooting for their first Marmonte League win this season when the Panthers host the Calabasas High Coyotes tomorrow night at 7 o’clock. Newbury Park (1-6 overall, 0-4 league) will be playing a Calabasas team (4-3 overall, 1-3 league) that this season moved to the Marmonte League from the former Frontier League. Last Friday night the Panthers lost to Agoura, 52-49, but broke five school records. "It was the same thing, fantastic on offense and horrible on defense and for everyone it was a frustrating experience," Hurley said. "A lot of it goes back to a lack of bodies. "Our problem is not Calabasas. It is Newbury Park defense. We are going to do the same thing as we’ve been doing the past seven weeks and hope it catches on. We’re working on it every day in a different slant and in a different way." In the Agoura game, quarterback Rudy Carpenter completed a record 38 of 56 passes; a record 524 yards–with three intercepted; and a record seven touchdown passes. He also carried the ball 18 times for 51 yards. In addition, wide receiver Justin Cox pulled down 13 catches for a game record 270 yards and receiver Bryce Winter had a record 17 pass receptions for 187 yards and nine ground carries for 77 yards. "We’d trade all of this for couple of wins," Hurley said. "Cox and Winter played a great game and those same kids turn around on defense and we don’t get it done on that side of the ball. I’d give a lot for those five kids who quit to come back. It would have been a different season. "We suited up 29 for Agoura. We have some people back and younger kids who were playing sophomore football and are getting some experience, and getting better. Carpenter should practice four days this week. He played a little defense last week." Newbury Park, going ahead 49-45 on a 10-yard Carpenter to Winter pass with 2:26 remaining on the fourth quarter clock, finally succumbed to Agoura by the final score on Dustin Croick’s 12-yard pass to Braden Lepisto with 1:30 remaining. In addition to Calabasas at Newbury Park, Friday 7 o’clock Marmonte League games include Westlake at Simi Valley, Agoura visits Moorpark and Thousand Oaks entertains Royal. At 7:30 p.m. in Tri-Valley League games, Oaks Christian is at home to play Bishop Diego and Oak Park travels to Fillmore. Last Friday the Warriors (5-2 overall, 4-0 league) blanked the visiting Royal High Highlanders, 48-0, as quarterback Eric Vose completed seven of 11 passes for 139 yards and Westlake gained 195 yards on the ground. Running back Tahj Mowry carried 12 times for 57 yards and running back Merrill Mullaly had six carries for 59 yards. Westlake got ahead 21-0 at the end of the first quarter and by 41-0 by the halftime intermission. During the game Mullaly scored on 6- and 44-yard runs. Additional rushing touchdowns were made by running back Kenneth Mackins, 25-yards; Mowry, 1-yard, and running back Brian Urrea, 2 yards. Wide receiver Michael Stuart and Vose combined on a 34-yard aerial touchdown and kicker Trevor Conner kicked field goals of 29 and 31 yards in addition to five point-after touchdown kicks. The Warriors remaining point came on a PAT by kicker Ryan Merritt. The Coyotes made history for themselves in the Marmonte League by winning their first game as a new league member. Calabasas traveled to Simi Valley to beat the Pioneers, 10-7, as wide receiver Alex Rosenblum scored all the points. He scored in the first quarter on a 17-yard pass play from quarterback Keith Barrett, kicked the PAT and then kicked a 21-yard field goal during the second quarter. Rosenblum caught four passes for a team-leading 50 yards. Barrett completed seven of 16 passes for 94 yards and had none intercepted. In rushing, running back Barry Dadon carried three times for 21 yards, running back Brian Lasley was six for 18 yards, Arinze Ikemefuna had four for 18 yards and Obi Ikemefuna carried the ball twice for 11 yards. The Oaks Christian Lions (6-1 overall, 2-1 league) absorbed their first defeat in Tri-Valley League play as the visiting Carpinteria High Warriors won, 36-14. Running back Aaron Ware carried the ball 21 times for 105 yards and running back Adam Richter had eight carries for 38 yards. Quarterback Joey Halze connected on 10 of 20 passes–with three intercepted–for 146 yards. Tight end Joe Guiliani caught three passes for 53 yards and Jon Adams pulled in three for 41. Oaks Christian fell behind 14-0 at halftime and behind 21-0 in the third quarter before Guiliani scored on a 38-yard pass from Halze. Carpinteria scored twice more before Richter scored on a run from the 7-yard line in the fourth quarter. With quarterback Peter Burns throwing touchdown passes of seven and 15 yards to receiver Gavin Ketchum and one to receiver Mike Christensen for 12 yards, the Eagles (4-3 overall, 2-1 league) defeated the Nordhoff High Rangers, 20-8, after establishing a 12-0 halftime lead. On the evening, Burns was nine for 15–with two intercepted–for 139 yards including receiver Casey Webb, two for 37 yards, and Brandon Koller who had one catch for 30 yards. Christensen led the Eagle ground game with 129 yards in 23 carries. Head coach Charlie Wegher and his Agoura High football team will face a tough opponent—the Marmonte League-leading Musketeers—when the Chargers travel to Moorpark tomorrow for a 7 p.m. game. Wegher said his team (5-2, 3-1) must play its best game to have a chance against Moorpark (7-0, 4-0). As Agoura looked ahead, it had a 52-49 victory over the Newbury Park High Panthers to savor. Other Friday 7 o’clock Marmonte League games include Westlake at Simi Valley, Calabasas at Newbury Park and Thousand Oaks hosting Royal. In 7:30 p.m. Tri-Valley League games, Oaks Christian hosts Bishop Diego and Oak Park travels to Fillmore. |
